The Night Zira Found Us
It was around 6pm on a Saturday evening when our lives changed forever. We had just returned from Wollongong, tired from the drive, ready to settle in for the night. My son went to the door first, and that's when he heard it—a persistent, demanding meow.
"Mum, there's a kitten at our door," he called out.
"Just ignore it," I said, not thinking much of it. "Don't encourage it."
But this kitten had other plans.

He Chose Us
While I was getting my things from the car, my son called out again. "Mum, he's at my feet and won't leave me. What should I do?"
I gave him the same advice: just ignore it. But when I walked to the door, this tiny white kitten immediately ran to my feet, rubbing herself against my legs. Then she did something that melted my heart completely—he lay down at my feet, looking up at me with the most adorable face I'd ever seen.
That was it. I was done for.
Without thinking about the practicalities, without considering that we'd just lost our beloved 16-year-old Pomeranian Tyty last July, without worrying about the financial strain or emotional commitment—I opened the door and let him in. How could I say no to that face?
My son felt the same way. He brought an instant smile to both of us and gave us a reason to believe we could love another pet again.
Zira was a small white kitten, probably around 14–16 weeks old, with curious eyes and a very demanding personality. Even on the first night, it was clear he was confident, clever, and completely unafraid to make himself at home. From the moment he walked through the door, he acted like he already owned the place.
The Emergency Woolworths Run
As soon as he came inside, he started meowing and demanding attention. It was clear he was starving. But we weren't prepared—we had no cat food, no supplies, nothing. We'd just bought our own dinner, so we gave him bits of chicken while he literally bit at my feet and ankles, as if to say, "Hurry up, I'm hungry!"
He commanded us like he already owned the place, and honestly, we couldn't resist him.
I told my son to distract him while I made a quick run to Woolworths. I grabbed whatever I could find: wet food, snacks, shampoo and conditioner, and flea and worm prevention. We needed to help him, and we needed to do it fast.
Bath Time and Battle Scars
When I got home, we gave him a bath. He had fleas, and I get itchy easily, so I joked with him "If you want to stay with us, you need to take a bath and get your flea prevention. Deal?"
My son was nervous—it was his first time holding a cat. His paws were so sharp that he scratched his arm during the bath, but that didn't deter him one bit. He was already in love.
After her bath, we rewarded him with snacks. That's when my sister woke up and saw him for the first time. She didn't ask why we got a cat or question our decision. She just said, "He's so cute."
Exactly.
The Kmart Run
We told my sister to look after Zira (yes, we'd already named him by then—more on that in another post!) while we made another emergency run, this time to Kmart. We grabbed a bed, toys, and cat litter. All we could think about was making him feel at home.
I didn't order from Amazon because it was nighttime and we needed everything immediately. The Kmart supplies did the job perfectly.
We even made him a makeshift bed from a box with blankets, and since he seemed to love my son the most, we added his used shirt to make him feel comfortable and safe.
Zira Claims the Sofa
But Zira? He had his own ideas about where he'd sleep.
He completely ignored the bed we made for him and claimed our sofa and pillow instead. He took over one part of the couch like he'd been living there his whole life.
And you know what? We let him. We tried our best to make him feel at home, and he made it very clear that home, for him, was wherever he decided it would be.
Why Zira Became the Face of FurrificPet
Looking back on that night, I realize how unplanned and chaotic it all was. We weren't ready. We didn't have supplies. We were still grieving Tyty. But sometimes the best things in life aren't planned—they just show up at your door and refuse to leave.
Zira chose us that night, and in doing so, he reminded us that love doesn't wait for the perfect moment. It shows up when you need it most, even if you don't realize it yet.
That's why he's the face of FurrificPet. He represents the beautiful, messy, unplanned joy of welcoming a rescue pet into your life.
